Startup failure if D drive is missing or contains no media
Article ID: SFKB0003
Last Reviewed:   August 18, 1997
Applies To:   SPEED Ferret 2.0  (SPEED Ferret for Access 95)

Symptoms

SPEED Ferret fails to start, and displays one of the following messages:

  • Run-time error 68: Device unavailable.
  • Run-time error 76: Path not found.

Cause

Each time you start SPEED Ferret a new session journal is created. One of the items written to this file is the size of your Windows swap file. SPEED Ferret searches for the swap file first on the C drive, and then on the D drive. If the file is not found on the C drive, and if the D drive does not exist or does not have a root directory, then SPEED Ferret will fail to start.

Workaround

If drive D is a CD-ROM drive, you can eliminate the problem by placing a disk into the drive. The disk must contain files. A music CD-ROM will not work.

If your system has no drive D, then you can eliminate the problem by creating a permanent swap file on the C drive. To do this in Windows 95, open the Control Panel and double-click the System icon. Click the Performance tab and then click the Virtual Memory button. Then set the Minimum Virtual Memory Size to something larger than zero (0) Kb.
